Overview
The module involves a field trip to Taiwan. Before the visit, students will
have an opportunity to create videos related to culture, then they will
post the videos online and share with a group of students in Taiwan
(students in Taiwan will also generate videos). After both groups
viewing the videos, we will have an online lecture to discuss the
culture issues, including food, transportation, student life and so on.
Finally when we visit Taiwan, we will meet up with this group of
students and further investigation of culture differences.
20 of the 26 students will continue to do a placement in Taiwan.

Academic context
A204GED Global Experience in Hazards and Disaster Resilience / ECE / 2
This module is designed primarily for students studying on undergraduate
degree programmes related to Geography, Disaster Management and Energy
in the School of Energy, Construction and Environment but will be also
open to students on other courses within the school with interests in
disasters, hazards, risk and security.
The prime purpose of the module is for students to enhance their professional, academic and cultural awareness by undertaking studies relevant to their discipline during an international field trip (1-2 weeks). The field trip destination will be appropriate to studies of resilient environments, communities and infrastructure.
In an increasingly competitive labour market, students who can demonstrate an international knowledge and understanding as well as possessing an international profile are more employable. Additionally, global competencies such as cultural awareness, language skills and personal adaptability are valued by employers. An objective of this module is to develop these competencies such that students are more confident in their ability to operate in a global environment.
A range of international professional, academic and cultural experiences can help students broaden their horizons and permit discipline based academic theories to be contrasted with practice.
